Garage Cabinets in Atlanta, GA

An Atlanta garage in August is a different environment from anything inside the house. Temperature climbs sharply by midday, humidity follows the morning rain indoors through the door gap, and the concrete slab underfoot wicks moisture upward through anything resting directly on it. Garage cabinets that hold up year after year in those conditions start with the right box material, the right face finish and the right mount to keep the boxes off the slab and off a failing surface.

About our garage cabinet systems

Atlanta Cabinet Works designs and installs garage cabinet systems for the Atlanta area using materials rated for unconditioned spaces, from powder-coated steel base runs to wall-mounted upper banks that free the floor for two cars. The design starts with the garage's actual dimensions and what it stores, not with a standard kit.

Materials for an unconditioned garage

The climate inside an unheated, uncooled garage is not the climate inside the house. Temperature swings from a cold January morning to a hot August afternoon can span sixty degrees or more in a single day, and humidity climbs when rain blows in under the garage door or when a wet car pulls in. Materials that perform well in a kitchen pantry will delaminate, warp or rust in those conditions.

Powder-coated steel is the most durable option for unconditioned garage storage. The steel box resists the moisture that swells a wood panel, and the powder coat finish resists the corrosion that bare metal picks up over time in a humid climate. Steel boxes accept heavy loads without racking because they do not rely on glue joints the way a wood box does. The face finish holds through the temperature swings that cause paint on a wood substrate to crack and eventually peel.

Thermofoil, a vinyl film bonded to an MDF substrate under heat, performs well in a conditioned space. In an unconditioned garage the summer heat causes the film to lift and separate from the substrate at the edges, typically starting after one or two full heat cycles. Once the film begins to separate, the MDF underneath absorbs moisture and swells. Powder-coated steel faces or a high-density polymer board are the better long-term materials for garage use.

Layouts that keep the cars inside

A two-car garage loses its utility the moment storage fills the middle bay. Garage cabinet layouts are designed around the vehicle, not around the tools: the cars go in first, and the storage fills what remains at the perimeter. A standard two-car bay is roughly twenty feet wide and twenty feet deep. Two vehicles take most of that floor space; the side walls and the back wall are where the cabinets go.

Wall-mounted upper cabinets clear the floor entirely. A bank of uppers along the back wall stores seasonal items, sports equipment and supplies above the car hood line without taking any floor space. Slotted wall standards let the upper bank height be adjusted when the contents change. Base cabinets along a side wall work where one car leaves enough clearance to open the doors without stepping into the path of the other vehicle.

A combination layout puts uppers across the back wall and a base run along the wall facing the driver's side. The base run can include a workbench surface at thirty-six inches, a flat work area above a run of lower drawers and doors. The workbench depth is typically twenty-four inches, leaving the driver's side clear to walk beside the car. A tall pantry-style unit fits into a corner where it stacks from floor to ceiling without taking clearance from the car door swing.

Garage cabinet cost

Garage cabinet cost depends on the total linear footage, the material, whether the run includes base cabinets, wall-mounted uppers or both, and whether a workbench surface is part of the plan. A wall-mounted upper bank in powder-coated steel for the full back wall of a two-car garage, typically sixteen to twenty feet, runs an estimated $4,000 to $9,000 installed.

A combination base and upper run along one side wall, roughly ten to fourteen feet with a workbench surface across the middle section, runs an estimated $5,000 to $12,000 installed in powder-coated steel. The range reflects the depth of the run, the number of drawers versus doors and whether the workbench is a continuous surface or a modular top over base cabinets.

A full perimeter system covering three walls of a two-car garage, with overhead storage across the back and a base-and-upper run on each side wall with a full workbench station, typically falls in an estimated $10,000 to $22,000 range for a professionally installed powder-coated system.

Adjustable leg hardware, wall anchors rated for the slab and leveling work at installation are included in the installed price. These are estimates, subject to change. The final price is set in the written quote.

Installing on a garage slab

Concrete slab floors are not level, not perfectly smooth and not dry. A garage slab that looks flat will typically vary by one to three inches from one corner to the other, and it pulls moisture upward from the ground through capillary action. A base cabinet set directly on a slab rests on a surface that wicks water into its bottom panel through every season.

The standard solution for base cabinets is adjustable legs: stainless or powder-coated steel feet raise the cabinet box two to four inches above the slab. The legs adjust individually to bring a run into level across an uneven floor. A removable toe kick panel covers the legs without attaching to them, so the kick can come off for cleaning without pulling the cabinet from the wall.

Wall-mounted upper cabinets attach to studs or to a ledger fastened into the studs and never contact the slab at all. The mounting hardware is sized for the cabinet's loaded weight; a forty-eight inch upper loaded with tools and hardware can weigh several hundred pounds. Anchors go into the stud, not into the drywall, and each cabinet in the run is secured independently so a single fastener failure does not bring the whole bank down.

Questions

Garage Cabinet Systems: Common Questions

How long does a garage cabinet installation take?

A single-wall upper bank installs in a day for a professional crew. A full perimeter system with base runs, wall-mounted uppers and a workbench station typically takes two to three days on-site. Lead time for the cabinets runs four to eight weeks from the signed quote, depending on the system and the material grade.

Will there still be room for two cars after the cabinets go in?

A layout designed around the vehicles fits them. The design process starts with the garage dimensions and the number of cars, so vehicle clearance is part of the plan from the beginning. Wall-mounted uppers above the hood line and base cabinets placed outside the door sweep are the two positions that preserve the parking without compromise.

Why are thermofoil faces not recommended for a garage?

Thermofoil is a vinyl film heat-bonded to an MDF substrate. In a kitchen, temperature and humidity are controlled and the film stays bonded. In an unconditioned garage, summer heat causes the film to lift at the edges and then peel away from the surface. Once separation begins, the MDF beneath absorbs moisture and swells. Powder-coated steel faces do not have this failure mode under the same conditions.

Does the garage slab need preparation before the cabinet installation?

The slab does not need resurfacing for a wall-mounted system. For base cabinets on adjustable legs, the floor is measured across the planned run during the site visit to document how much leveling the feet will need to accomplish. A slab with significant heave or a floor drain running through the cabinet area may require the layout to be adjusted, which the site visit identifies before anything is manufactured.

What is the weight capacity of wall-mounted garage cabinet systems?

Most professional wall-mounted systems rate their upper cabinets at 200 to 500 pounds per unit when anchored into studs. The anchoring method matters as much as the cabinet rating: a cabinet fastened to studs with lag screws at sixteen-inch spacing holds far more than one screwed into drywall alone. The site visit confirms stud location and wall structure before the install plan is finalized.
