Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta summers combine sustained heat with high humidity and a pollen season that coats everything left outside. Outdoor kitchen cabinets on a covered patio or open terrace face that climate every day of the year, not only when the grill is running. The materials that last are the ones built for it: marine-grade polymer and powder-coated stainless steel are the two box types that hold up in Georgia without swelling, rusting or peeling across seasons.

About our outdoor kitchen cabinets

Atlanta Cabinet Works designs and installs outdoor kitchen cabinet runs for covered patios, screened enclosures and open terraces in the Atlanta area. The design accounts for the grill, the side burner, the refrigerator and the access doors before a single box is ordered, because a cutout that does not match the appliance spec means rebuilding the run.

Materials that last outside in Georgia

Wood swells in Georgia's humidity. An outdoor kitchen cabinet built from plywood or solid wood will show joint failure within two to three seasons on a patio that is not fully protected from rain and blown moisture. The humidity that makes an Atlanta summer uncomfortable accelerates the failure of any material that absorbs it.

Marine-grade polymer, sometimes called HDPE board, is a solid thermoplastic that does not absorb water. The material does not rot, does not support mold growth and does not expand and contract with humidity changes that would open wood joints over time. It accepts paint for color, but the color runs through the full thickness so a chip or scratch does not expose a different material beneath the surface. Base cabinets built from marine-grade polymer require an insulating heat shield between the box and the grill opening to protect the material from direct radiated heat.

Powder-coated 304 or 316 stainless steel is the other proven material for outdoor kitchens. The steel box does not absorb moisture, and the powder coat finish protects the metal from the pitting that bare stainless picks up in a humid, pollen-heavy outdoor environment. A covered patio that blows rain and pollen into the cabinet run still needs drainage gaps and airflow inside the base cabinets: a base cabinet sealed tight at the back and bottom holds standing moisture even when the face material is waterproof.

Planning the run around the grill

The grill determines every other dimension in an outdoor kitchen cabinet run. The box that holds the grill is sized from the grill's cutout specification, not from the grill's nominal width. A grill listed as thirty-six inches wide may require a cutout of thirty-four to thirty-five inches in width and twenty-two to twenty-four inches in depth, and the exact numbers come from the appliance manufacturer's spec sheet, not from the product name on the box. Ordering the cabinet run before confirming the spec sheet produces a cutout that does not fit the grill, and rebuilding the run to correct the opening is the most expensive mistake an outdoor kitchen makes.

Combustible clearance from the grill cutout to any polymer or wood cabinet face follows the grill manufacturer's minimum, typically four to six inches on each side and twelve to eighteen inches at the rear. An insulating jacket is required when the grill sits closer than the minimum to the adjacent cabinet material. Side burner and power burner cutouts follow their own separate specifications and cannot share a clearance calculation with the main grill.

The access door below the grill should be wide enough for the drip tray and the gas shutoff valve to pass through without lifting the grill head. The entire run is laid out on paper with every appliance spec confirmed before manufacturing begins, because the positions of the appliances set the positions of every door, drawer and structural post in the run.

Outdoor kitchen cabinet cost

Outdoor kitchen cabinet cost varies more than interior cabinet cost because the choice between marine-grade polymer and powder-coated stainless steel creates a substantial spread. A polymer base run of eight to twelve linear feet with an access door bank, a drawer section and the grill cutout typically runs an estimated $4,500 to $9,000 for the boxes and installation, before appliances or countertop are added.

A stainless steel run of the same length runs an estimated $8,000 to $18,000 for the boxes, depending on whether the steel is 304 or 316 grade, whether it carries a powder coat finish and whether the run includes a refrigerator opening, an ice maker bay or a sink cutout alongside the grill. Appliances and countertop are priced separately.

A full outdoor kitchen island with a grill bay, side storage, a prep zone and a compact refrigerator runs an estimated $12,000 to $35,000 installed for a mid-range build. A premium run with 316 stainless boxes, higher-end appliances and a stone countertop sits at the upper end of that range or above it.

Countertop material is quoted separately. Porcelain tile and concrete are common outdoor choices; sealed granite and certain quartz products are used on covered patios where direct weather exposure is limited.

These are estimates, subject to change. A written quote confirms the final price once the layout and appliance specifications are in hand.

Covered patio or open terrace: what changes

A covered patio and an open terrace call for different decisions at the design level. A covered patio reduces direct sun exposure and direct rain, which makes it more tolerant at the margins, but it is not a substitute for truly outdoor-rated materials. Blown rain, condensation from cooking and pollen accumulation occur on a covered patio just as they do in the open, and any cabinet material that absorbs moisture will fail in either setting.

An open terrace fully exposed to sun, rain and wind is the harder environment. On an open terrace, the base cabinet run needs ventilation gaps at the bottom to allow water to drain and air to circulate. A solid toe kick that seals the underside traps moisture, and standing water accelerates corrosion in steel and softens polymer joints. A design that accounts for drainage from the start is less expensive than a retrofit drainage fix after the run is installed.

Atlanta's pollen season runs from late February through May and returns in fall. Pollen accumulates on horizontal surfaces and in gaps between cabinet sections at a rate that surprises most homeowners who have not managed an outdoor kitchen through a full year. A cabinet run with tight-fitting doors, a smooth countertop surface and minimal horizontal ledges between sections cleans up faster after a heavy pollen event than one with decorative corbels, exposed rails and wide gaps.

Questions

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets: Common Questions

Does it matter whether the patio is covered or open for the cabinet material choice?

The material stays the same for either exposure: marine-grade polymer or powder-coated stainless. What changes is the design detail. An open terrace needs drainage gaps and airflow built into the base run, while a covered patio can carry a slightly more finished look. Both settings expose cabinets to humidity, pollen and blown moisture, which is what rules out wood as a durable material for outdoor kitchens in Georgia.

How are grill openings measured and confirmed before ordering the cabinet run?

Every grill manufacturer publishes a cutout specification that lists the exact width, depth and height of the opening required. Those numbers are pulled from the spec sheet before the cabinet run is laid out. Nominal grill width and actual cutout width differ by brand: a thirty-six inch grill from one manufacturer may need a thirty-four inch cutout while another requires thirty-five. The boxes are ordered only after every appliance spec sheet is confirmed.

Atlanta's humidity is high all year. How does that affect the inside of outdoor base cabinets?

Humidity at the surface is handled by polymer and stainless: neither material absorbs moisture. The concern inside a base cabinet is condensation and standing water in a run that is sealed without ventilation. Proper drainage gaps at the base and airflow inside the cabinet prevent that buildup. This design requirement is addressed in the original layout, not after the run is installed.

What countertop holds up on an outdoor kitchen in Atlanta?

Porcelain tile handles direct heat from the grill and resists staining from pollen and humidity without periodic sealing. Concrete can be cast to any dimension but needs a sealer refreshed every few years to resist moisture penetration. Sealed granite is used on covered patios more often than on fully exposed terraces. Each material is quoted separately from the cabinet run and the appliances.

How long does an outdoor kitchen cabinet project take?

A covered patio outdoor kitchen with a confirmed layout and all appliance specs typically takes six to ten weeks from a signed quote to completed installation. Most of the lead time is in manufacturing; the on-site installation runs one to three days depending on run length and appliance count. The measure visit and appliance spec review happen before manufacturing begins, because no cutout can be sized without the spec sheet in hand.
